In October 2019, The Be One Percent community raised £7,041.96 for Education for the Children’s Water Filter Programme, helping them to provide access to clean and safe drinking water for a community in Jocotenango, Guatemala.
Ecofiltro water filters are given to the families of every student currently at the School of Hope run by the charity or studying within their Further Education Programme. In total, this is over 700 students, across almost 400 families, most of whom prior to joining the programme did not have access to clean drinking water.
Our donation has ensured that these families will continue to have clean water throughout this year and into the next. This support is even more important in the context of the current global health crisis. More than ever keeping families healthy is a priority as they will be the community hardest hit if they were to fall ill. The Education for the Children team on the ground in Guatemala worked tirelessly to deliver essential supplies of medicine and food, as well as replacement filters to ensure all the families in the programme have access to clean water whilst in “quarantine” and under strict curfew ordered by the Guatemalan government as part of emergency legislation to tackle the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
