Charity Partner
Our first project of 2019 will help our charity partner Glad's House reach around 500 children with their weekly soccer programme that combines sport with education and outreach work. Glad’s House is a street-based organisation in Mombasa, Kenya that supports homeless children and young people. As well as a drop-in centre (which we funded last year) they provide street soccer and street education programmes which give homeless children a safe place to play, eat, get medical care and build relationships with the Glad’s House team often leading to further intervention. Our January 1% will be used for 18 months of street soccer and street education 3 times a week. We’ll fund a football coach to run the soccer programme, lunch for the children at one of the weekly sessions, one-to-ones with street workers, first aid for any medical concerns plus lessons in basic numeracy and literacy as a pathway to the Glad’s House drop-in centre.

Since 2006, Glad’s House has been working with the children of Mombasa, Kenya who are deemed ‘too challenging’ by the rest of society. Their team of social workers, various sports programmes, apprenticeships, drop-in centre and education facilities help young people up to the age of 27 to build a future away from the streets. Glad’s House also work within the prison system and are lobbying the government to prevent children being persecuted and arrested for the ‘crime’ of being homeless.
