Through supporting local distribution networks, SolarAid has reached over 11.3 million people in rural Africa since 2006. They are now launching innovative programmes, which are designed specifically to reach the poorest communities so that nobody is left in the dark. Just 4% of the rural population in Malawi have access to electricity and rely on dangerous lighting alternatives. Solar Aid's 'Mayi Walas' (Shining Mothers) programme trains women entrepreneurs to grow their solar energy businesses to reach their communities through education, training, finance and marketing of affordable energy.
Our 1% supports:
  • 3 Mayi Wala groups established
  • 30 women entrepreneurs receiving bespoke training 504 solar lights sold to their communities
  • 2,631 people reached by solar lamps
  • £16.6K saved by families
  • 1M extra study hours for children
  • 263.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide averted
  • 1,379 people will have improved health outcomes
"Together, we are closer to ending the darkness."

SolarAid is an international charity founded in 2006 to combat poverty and climate change. Through  social enterprise, Sunny Money they provide access to solar lights in Malawi and Zambia to help catalyse solar markets with renewable light. 590 million people in Africa alone have no access to electricity. Without electricity families have no clean source of light, leaving millions to rely on expensive and dangerous alternatives. Solar lights are safe, clean and affordable. It is a small, but smart innovation that gives off hours of light in the evening so families can earn, learn and feel safe after dark. Just one lamp can transform the future for an entire family and is the first step out of poverty.
