This month our 1% will fund irrigation and water storage in Kenya. Self Help Africa will be expanding its work to improve food security for 10 communities in the Narok and Kajiado districts in Kenya. Some of the areas in these districts suffer recurring drought and experience water deficit for substantial periods of the year. This has been identified as a key environmental factor limiting crop yield for the majority of households. Following success in other areas this projects will facilitate run-off water harvesting to improve food sustainability. Drip irrigation kits are a cheap and effective way to improve  water efficiency. Drip irrigation increases the growing period and enables families to grow a wider variety of crops. Our funding this month will purchase 10 large water storage tanks and 50 drip irrigation kits. These simple steps will directly benefit 300 people helping to improve their food security.

Self Help Africa helps people in rural Africa grow enough food to feed themselves, earn a living, and access basic services. Self Help Africa equips people with the skills they need to move out of poverty by training farmers in new techniques and teaching basic business skills. Be One Percent via Self Help Africa have supported tree nurseries, planting over 8000 trees and set up Microfinance initiatives providing 12,000 women in Uganda with savings and small business loan facilities.
