Doubling the impact with Match Funding to feed and help educate 1,000 + children
Through our partnership with Mary's Meals every £12.20 will provide a school meal for a year to a child in Malawi. This month this provision will be doubled through match funding. DFID (the UK Department for International Development) will be match funding our donation pot. This will mean our 1%Pot will bring meals to 1,347 school children.
The school feeding programmes have a positive impact on many levels. They reduce hunger and malnutrition with fortified meals. They increase enrolment and improve attendance, concentration and learning.
Be One Percent currently sponsor 3 schools in Malawi including Gomani Primary School in Blantyre
The headteacher at Gomani Primary, Mr Manjomo, describes the biggest benefit that the feeding has had on the school;
"We are very grateful for the support of the donors who provide the funding for our children. We have noticed that our enrolment continues to go up, we feel that this is a result of the phala being offered to the children"
Its not just the teachers who are pleased to have Mary's Meals in their school. One of the children Betty said;
"I like eating phala and playing with my friends. My parents can't always provide for us so i am happy to eat here. I like my lessons and try as hard as i can so i will be successful when i am grown up"
Mary's Meals now feed over 1,000,000 children worldwide in some of the worlds poorest communities. Be One Percent are proud to be part of this simple and powerful intervention.
Mary’s Meals is an international movement that sets up school feeding projects in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education. The charity now feeds 1,667,067 children every school day and it costs just £15.90 to feed a child for a school year. We sponsored our first school with Mary’s Meals in 2011 and now feed over 1,000 a day.
