For our birthday this year we will be partnering with Against Malaria, the organisation ranked #1 in the GiveWell top charities list that has been working tirelessly for 15 years to protect the world’s poorest communities from the potential devastation of malaria.
Malaria kills half a million people every year and 400 million fall ill. Before bed nets were made available, it was three or more times that. Nets are a proven intervention – a more effective a way of saving lives than any other.
In the past 15 years Against Malaria have collected donations from 187 countries and raised over $160 million to fight malaria. Fighting malaria is a very good investment. Malaria is the single greatest drag on the economy of Africa. Every $1 million spent on malaria prevention and treatment effectively improves the GDP – the wealth – of the continent of Africa by $12 million.
Our May 1% will buy malaria nets for 15 villages protect them while they sleep at night from the bites of disease-carrying mosquitoes that would otherwise cause severe illness, or worse.
We’ve been partnering with Against Malaria since 2011 and in that time have funding enough nets for over 30,000 people, preventing an estimated 50 deaths.
Rob Mather, Against Malaria’s founder and CEO, will be joining us for our annual birthday pub quiz in Liverpool this year so do book your place to hear his inspiring story and celebrate our achievements together.
